For a glacial period to develop, temperatures must be cold enough that snow accumulates faster than it melts - compressing first into firn, then into glacial ice over time. That part is intuitive enough.
However, the massive snowfall required to build those ice sheets demands enormous amounts of water vapour in the atmosphere. And water vapour requires heat to form. Cold enough to preserve ice indefinitely, yet warm enough to generate the precipitation that creates it in the first place - both conditions must be true simultaneously.
When asked to explain how that paradox resolves, the researcher gives the most honest answer available. He can't. And that admission is more significant than it might appear. If the fundamental mechanism driving ice ages remains genuinely unresolved, then everything built on top of that assumption deserves a much closer look.
