The Tunguska event on June 30th 1908 arrived from the direction of the sun - which is precisely why nobody saw it coming. Randall explains the geometry directly. Objects approaching from that angle require looking almost directly into the sun to detect them, making advance observation effectively impossible with the naked eye. The witnesses who did see it in those final moments described something that appeared to emerge from the sun itself - born out of it, or spat from it - a description Randall reads not as mythology but as an accurate account of what a sun-grazing approach looks like to an observer on the ground.

What followed that appearance was a sequence Randall describes with the physical precision it deserves. The object grew brighter than the sun itself before detonating in an atmospheric explosion whose force reached people standing 40 miles from the epicenter with enough violence to physically lift them off their feet and throw them 20 to 30 feet through the air. No crater. No ground strike. Just an airburst of sufficient magnitude to flatten an area the size of a major city and register on seismic instruments across the planet. Randall’s broader point is the one this event makes unavoidably - an object that arrives from the direction of the sun cannot be tracked by the methods we rely on today, which means the warning time for another Tunguska scale event could be measured not in years or months but in seconds.
