Randall has been studying the Finger Lakes of western New York through the same lens he applies to the Channeled Scablands of eastern Washington - and the conclusion he is building toward is striking. The two landscapes, separated by thousands of miles, may share the same origin.

The key observation is geometric. If you trace the long axis of each individual Finger Lake and extend those lines, they do not run parallel. They converge - radially - on a single point. That convergence point sits directly above the deepest part of Lake Ontario, where the lake floor shows a pattern of elongated scoured features that Randall describes as deeply anomalous. The drumlins of the surrounding region share the same orientation, their long axes pointing back toward the same location.

Randall’s hypothesis is that a bolide impacted the Laurentide Ice Sheet at that convergence point - at a time when the ice over Lake Ontario was likely close to a mile thick. The impact would have fractured and vaporised the ice, releasing catastrophic volumes of meltwater that surged southwest into the Allegheny highlands as a backwash, then reversed and drained northeast through the Saint Lawrence system into the North Atlantic. The flat valley floors of the modern creek systems running off the south ends of the Finger Lakes, he argues, are the sediment deposits left behind when that backwash finally lost its energy and reversed.

The Channeled Scablands were carved by catastrophic water moving downhill. The Finger Lakes record catastrophic water moving uphill - and the geometry of the landscape still points, precisely, to where Randall believes the trigger was.
