Randall traces his fascination with catastrophe back to a childhood View-Master reel from a film called Animal World - scenes of dinosaurs destroyed by a catastrophic event, the ground fracturing beneath them, the sky turning red and catching fire. It stayed with him. Fast forward to 1980, and three independent research teams arrived simultaneously at the same conclusion - the extinction of the dinosaurs was not a prolonged process but a sudden catastrophic event triggered by a cosmic impact. They had reached that conclusion independently, from different angles, with different evidence.

Randall identifies that moment as a major turning point - not just in the science of extinction, but in the broader acceptance of catastrophe as a legitimate explanatory framework for events in Earth's history. Before 1980, the idea that a single impact from space could terminate a dominant species was fringe thinking. After 1980, it became the established consensus. Randall’s argument throughout his research is that the same shift in thinking needs to happen for the human timeline - and that the dinosaur extinction was simply the moment science first opened the door to what the geological record had been showing all along.
