How much time elapsed between the excavation of the bedrock basin and the first deposition of the chaotic sediment mass sitting above it? Randall’s assessment is that the answer may be essentially none. The two events were simultaneous.
That simultaneity has extraordinary implications. If the excavation of the bedrock and the infill of large sediment volumes happened at the same time, the Finger Lakes were not carved by slow incremental erosion over thousands of years. They were blasted out in an instantaneous, inconceivably violent and powerful event - and immediately filled with the material that same event was carrying. The Finger Lakes landscape was not shaped by time. It was shaped by a catastrophe of such speed and force that the excavation and the burial of that excavation happened in the same geological moment.
