Randall uses that comparison deliberately. The moon is not a curiosity. It is a record - an unmodified surface that preserves every impact it has ever received, exactly where it landed, without erosion or burial or geological recycling to hide the evidence.
Looking at the Schrödinger crater region on the lunar surface, Randall counts eight impact craters in a single section - spaced closely together, arriving in rapid succession, gouging out a tremendously deep canyon in a sequence that would have been almost instantaneous on a geological timescale. That is what a bombardment epoch looks like when the surface preserving it has no mechanism to erase the record. Randall’s point is direct - if anyone doubts that cosmic impacts are an ongoing process in the solar system, the answer requires no research, no papers, and no laboratory. Go outside with a pair of binoculars. Look at the moon. The evidence has been visible every clear night for the entirety of human history.
