For most of the Great Pyramid's existence, the rough inner limestone blocks now visible to every visitor were completely hidden. The entire structure was encased in smooth, polished white limestone - a seamless surface that would have been visible from enormous distances across the desert, catching the light in a way that is almost impossible to imagine from the degraded monument that survives today. Those casing stones were still in place just 675 years ago, stripped away relatively recently in historical terms to build medieval Cairo.

The conventional dating places the pyramid's construction at roughly 4,500 years ago - a figure derived primarily from historical and textual sources rather than direct physical measurement of the structure itself. Randall points to a growing body of evidence suggesting that date may be significantly too recent, and that the evidence comes from the pyramid itself.

The erosion patterns on the exposed inner stones tell a story about the timescales over which the structure has been subject to weathering. For thousands of years the casing stones protected the interior from direct exposure to the elements. The erosion visible beneath them, and on the portions of the structure that have been exposed for longer periods, is inconsistent with a construction date of only 4,500 years ago. Randall argues the physical evidence points to a structure considerably older - one whose true age the conventional timeline, built on textual attribution rather than geological analysis, has systematically underestimated.
