In the last 200,000 years the glacial cycle has completed at least four full turns - ice advancing, sea levels dropping, ice melting, sea levels rising - each cycle so geomorphically extreme that it effectively overwrites much of the physical evidence left by the one before it. Randall uses a construction analogy that makes the cumulative problem immediately clear. Build a building. Demolish it. On the rubble, build another. Demolish that. Repeat four times. Now try to determine which pieces of rubble came from the first building versus the third.

That is the challenge facing anyone attempting to read the deep geological record of Earth's catastrophic past. Each successive glacial cycle doesn't just add new evidence - it actively destroys and buries the evidence of what came before. The further back you go, the more layers of catastrophic overwriting have accumulated on top of whatever preceded them. Randall’s argument throughout his research is that this compounding erasure is precisely why the conventional timeline of human civilization appears to begin so recently - not because nothing existed before, but because four successive catastrophic cycles have made the evidence of anything earlier extraordinarily difficult to find, identify, and interpret correctly.
