The prosaic explanation for why humanity has not returned to the Moon since 1972 is that Nixon cancelled the Apollo programme to cut costs during the Vietnam War, decommissioning the Saturn rocket fleet in what Randall Carlson describes as a genuinely dumb decision. NASA administrators have since confirmed publicly that the technology was lost - a statement that is, as Randall notes, not even particularly controversial or conspiratorial. It is simply what happened.

What makes the question more interesting is the outrageous hypothesis sitting just behind it. If an earlier civilisation left any trace of its presence on the Moon, what might the Apollo missions have encountered? And if something was found, would that change the calculus around why the programme ended so abruptly and why returning has proved so persistently difficult? Randall is careful not to assert - but in the spirit of the outrageous hypothesis, he considers it worth asking.
