The case for a sustained human presence on the Moon comes down to resource chemistry. Randall Carlson walks through the key volatile substances - water, carbon, and nitrogen - that are scarce on the lunar surface but essential for any long-duration mission. Both carbon and nitrogen are required for food production. Carbon combined with hydrogen opens up additional applications, including a process called carbothermal reduction - a method of extracting oxygen directly from lunar rocks by using carbon to chemically reduce the iron oxides present in the regolith.

The scale of that opportunity is significant. Some lunar rocks contain up to 40% oxygen by composition, locked into the mineral structure and inaccessible without the right extraction process. Carbothermal reduction provides that process - turning what would otherwise be inert rubble into a source of breathable atmosphere and rocket propellant. The same chemistry that could sustain a lunar colony also feeds directly into the production of methane fuel, closing the loop on the resource requirements for both habitation and return missions. The Moon, properly understood, is not a destination without resources. It is a destination whose resources require the right industrial chemistry to unlock.
