The asteroid belt represents one of the most resource-rich environments accessible to humanity - and carbonaceous chondrite asteroids, among the most volatile-rich objects in the solar system, have been impacting the lunar surface across geological timescales. The hypothesis that these impacts have seeded the Moon with meaningful concentrations of carbon, nitrogen, and related compounds is scientifically plausible and potentially transformative for the viability of a permanent lunar presence.

The limitation is sample data. The conclusions that can be drawn from current lunar sample collections are not sufficient to confirm or quantify what has actually survived those impacts. Carbonaceous material is fragile under the extreme conditions of a high-velocity collision - vaporisation, scattering, and chemical alteration are all possible outcomes - and without retrieving significant quantities of surviving meteoritic material directly from the lunar surface, the question of what the Moon actually holds remains open.

In the meantime, experimental and numerical modelling are the best available tools for probing what happens to projectile material during and immediately after impact. This is precisely the kind of foundational research that a sustained return to the Moon - with the infrastructure to collect, process, and analyse surface materials at scale - would be able to move beyond models and into direct measurement.
