The scenario Randall describes is not science fiction. A relatively minor cosmic or planetary event - minor on the scale of what the solar system is capable of delivering - could terminate civilization as it currently exists, substantially reduce the global population, impose a new Stone Age on whoever survives, and trigger major environmental destruction with severe and widespread habitat loss and species extinction across the board. That outcome does not require a six mile asteroid. It requires something considerably more modest - and considerably more plausible.

The reason Randall does not frame this as speculation is straightforward. We now know with reasonable confidence that something like this did happen, approximately 12 to 13,000 years ago. The Younger Dryas boundary carries the evidence. The question he raises next is the one that pushes the timeline further back - did something similar happen 12 to 13,000 years before that? There is no definitive proof. But there is suggestive evidence - and Randall notes that the broader picture emerging from research across multiple disciplines is that civilization destroying events occur far more frequently than anyone imagined even a few decades ago. The Younger Dryas was not a unique anomaly in an otherwise stable planetary history. It may be one entry in a recurring pattern that the geological record is only now beginning to reveal.
