On one side you have delta oxygen-18 isotope data from an ice core, one of the most reliable proxies available for reconstructing past temperature. On the other, a carbon-14 dated pollen study from Holland tracking vegetation changes across the last 100,000 years. When July temperatures dropped from around seven degrees centigrade down to five, the pollen record essentially collapses. No pollen means no vegetation. The landscape was stripped bare.
What makes this worth paying attention to is not just the magnitude of that temperature drop but the fact that two entirely different methodologies, applied in two entirely different places, are capturing the same event. The Younger Dryas shows up in the ice core and it shows up in the pollen stratigraphy. When independent proxies converge like that, you are no longer looking at an artifact of any single technique. You are looking at something that actually happened, and the question then becomes what was powerful enough to cause it.
