When Language Replaces Evidence in Climate Science

Judith Curry, at the time chair of the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Georgia Tech, was among the more prominent voices pushing back against the casual use of the word denier in climate discourse. Her position was precise: reserve it for those explicitly tied to political advocacy groups, not as a catch-all label for anyone who raises questions about the science. A commenter responding to that moment put it even more directly, noting that anyone who legitimizes that term in this context is simply not a serious person, and that deploying it constitutes an unforgivable devaluation of a word whose historical weight is inseparable from its meaning.

That is the point worth sitting with. The word carries a specific and grave historical resonance, and reaching for it to dismiss a scientific argument is not a neutral rhetorical choice. It is a tactic, and a revealing one. When the response to a question about evidence is a word engineered to invoke moral disgust rather than engage the data, that tells you something important. It tells you that the data is not strong enough to do the work on its own, and that something else has to be brought in to close the argument. That is not how science defends itself. That is how politics does.
