He walks through one of the most dramatic climate shifts in recent geological history: the Younger Dryas. The planet plunged into full glacial cold and stayed there for twelve to thirteen hundred years. Then it lurched out just as fast, maybe faster. The brackets are clear now: less than 12,900 years ago at the start, roughly 11,600 years ago at the end. What caused such an abrupt return to ice age conditions? And what triggered the equally sudden warming that followed? These aren't minor fluctuations. This is the climate whipsawing between extremes in spans of time that, geologically speaking, are essentially instant. The Younger Dryas sits right at the threshold of recorded human history, and understanding it means understanding the conditions our ancestors faced as they built the first civilizations.
