Why is it that a woman's stammering, crying, emotional appeals are taken with such seriousness? In an era when the Feminine Imperative defines our social discourse a woman's tears hold a certain power to keep us in rapt attention. 'If she's crying it MUST be serious, it MUST be for real.
There are evolved reasons why we take a woman's tears as an honest signaling, but there is also a degree of agency in the fact that men (and women) naturally seek to solve whatever problem prompted a woman's negative emotions. It's no mystery that women figured out the power their tears, their emotional outbursts, have on private and public perception. But do women use these signals honestly or to achieve a desired end? Is it possible a woman genuinely feels what she says she feels while at the same time using her emotional state to manipulate others?
