36:44Now PlayingOver 6,000 transgender individuals are estimated to be incarcerated in state and federal facilities in the US. In a penal system that segregates inmates by their assigned sex at birth, prisons are quite literally designed to not respect the rights of incarcerated transgender people. Only a few special housing units for trans inmates exist in the country, with most trans people behind bars either stuck in solitary confinement or abandoned to contend with heightened discrimination and violence from prison guards and the general prison population. Even in California, which, at least on paper, has some of the most progressive laws on trans prisoners' rights in the country, the problem of disproportionate punishment and vulnerability is widespread. Journalist Lee Romney and A.D. Lewis, an attorney with the Prison Law Office, join Rattling the Bars to discuss the reality of transgender prisoners in California and around the country.
