YouTube Description
as posted by the channelWhy are mental health crisies so often deadly in our country? Last week, in Connecticut there was another tragic shooting of a person in a mental health crisis. It was a quiet afternoon in Bolton, CT when family members expressed concern that 29 year old Maxim Novak was threatening self-harm and more with the two knives he was holding. Listen as Trooper Benier, holding the taser, tries to deescalate, but Trooper Contenta makes a different choice.
Novak despite the roughly 6 shots fired has been hospitalized, and miraculously survived. But in 2020, 19 year old Mubarak Soulemane, also in a mental health crisis, wasn't as fortunate? Soulemane documented with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia had a psychotic break and attempted to rob a store of a cell phone while holding a knife. He stole a car from an uber driver and attempted to flee. He was quickly caught and was pinned in place by multiple police cars. However, he was shot fatally through a car window by Trooper North despite the fact he was alone in a car holding a knife. Even The State Inspector General cited the need for deescalation in Soulemane's case. But apparently, in the past 4 years not much has changed. Are we going to hear the same promises of retraining and change again? Surely police need better tools than tasers and guns for mental health crisis! What do you think can be done to prevent these tragedies? Please share your ideas with me. I think we all have loved ones who have suffered from mental illness at some point in their lives and if we ask for help, we don't want that call to end their lives. Please be safe out there, I have been doing the shorts to let my PAR family know that I am always have my focus on justice even when I can't do a full report for you. I am hoping next week we will be able to give you a full PAR report. I miss seeing you all in the live chat. -taya graham
