On Monday, President Trump finally spoke the words and condemned the KKK, Neo Nazis, and White Nationalists, performing the absolute bare minimum two days too late. While he received “partial credit” for his better late than never statement, he immediately undercut whatever progress he made when the news broke that he was considering a pardon of racist sheriff Joe Arpaio.
According to a report from Fox News, of all places, Trump is considering pardoning his good friend Sheriff Joe thanks to his tireless work of demonizing undocumented immigrants. Trump made his statement on Sunday to Fox, in the midst of the ongoing trauma surrounding the Charlottesville white nationalist rally.
Said Trump:
“I am seriously considering a pardon for Sheriff Arpaio. He has done a lot in the fight against illegal immigration. He’s a great American patriot and I hate to see what has happened to him.”
Arpaio was found guilty of contempt of court two weeks ago for violating a court order in the pursuit of racist witchhunting.
Arpaio was ordered by a state judge to stop his program of racially profiling motorists who he and his officers suspected of being undocumented immigrants. It was this program which earned praise and an endorsement from President Trump, but which rational Americans recognized as an incredibly racist policy carried out by law enforcement.
Joe’s racial profiling tactics are just one of his cruel strategies as sheriff. He also forced inmates to wear pink underwear and housed them in tents in the deserts where they often faced temperatures in excess of 100 degrees.
The media coverage from his arrest and contempt charge helped contribute to Arpaio’s lost re-election effort, so now racist sherriff Joe is just a racist private citizen.
But that didn’t stop President Trump from doing his best to stand up to one of his biggest fans. After all, as even his allies slowly turn against him, Trump knows he has to keep his friends close.
Arpaio, who is 85, faces up to six months in prison, but because of his advanced age, may not face any time for his crimes. Still, if our President has his way, yet another racist will remain a free man.
