Now, none of the plague-infested fleas appear to have infected any human beings, so the rest of us can breathe easy – at least for now.
Health officials in Coconino county, Arizona made their discovery last week after officials found prarie dogs in the area carrying plague-infested fleas.
No word yet on whether the prarie dogs had contracted the disease from their tiny passengers. Officials have warned residents in the area to keep an eye on local dog colonies and be vigilant for any sudden die-offs. Such a quick change might signal that the plague has spread to the small mammals.
Though these plague-carrying bugs are concerning, it turns out that a handful of people in the states contract the plague yearly. In June of this year, three New Mexico residents contracted the plague and survived. The two women and one man, in their 50s and 60s were hospitalized.
Western parts of the united states have been and remain vulnerable to the plague for the last century, with approximately 7 citizens a year contracting the disease.
Fortunately for those 7 people a year, the plague in its modern form is easily treated with proper medication. Left untreated, it is still just as deadly and fatal as it was back in the days of old.
So while this new crop of plague-infested fleas may not be a sign of the end times, it is further proof that nature is always seeking out ways to rid the earth of us – can you really blame ‘em?
