5:00Now PlayingDemocrats in the House of Representatives have decided to heed the advice of the U.S. Supreme Court, and they will be limiting the scope of their request for Donald Trump's financial documents, including those from Deutsche Bank. The Supreme Court had said that these Democrats needed to prove the importance of these documents before they could obtain them, and that's exactly what this is about. Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins explains what's happening.

Democrats in the house of representatives are inching closer and closer to getting their hands on Donald Trump's financial information specifically from Deutsche bank. Uh, there are two committees, uh, currently working on this. Uh, we have the house intelligence committee and the, uh, financial services committee and here's what's happening, uh, obviously month or so ago, whatever it was, we had the Supreme court ruling came out that said, Hey, Donald, you are not above the law. You can, in fact, be prosecuted. You could be investigated. You could be all these things. That was one ruling. And there was another ruling. And this one were related to the house of representatives, not the investigators up in New York. That ruling actually said, you guys do have to be able to show that, uh, this is related to something. They didn't necessarily specify the something, but they had to say like, you got to show that this isn't just because you're trying to get Donald Trump on a crime.
Like there has to be a reason why you either stink. This is important. Or, you know, if this is related to legislation, but you've got to come at me with something more than just, we want to see if he committed a crime, you have to say, we're pretty sure there was a crime in here. And that's why we need these. Um, and so that is what these two committees decided this week they were going to do. They were going to take the Supreme court's advice. So instead of issuing this broad subpoena for these financial documents, which is what they had done, they decided to scale it down. Now, in terms of an investigation, yes, you want as much information as possible. But when you know that you're working up against a rigged court system, you do have to jump through whatever hoops they put out there for you, but by narrowing the scope, they can also easier, uh, more easily, sorry.
They can more easily prove that this is related to a specific investigation based on specific evidence. Cause they do have testimony. They have testimony from Michael Cohen that said, Hey, Donald Trump committed bank fraud. You don't really need a whole heck of a lot more than that because they have that testimony. The testimony was given to them. I mean, verbally to them, that's the evidence they need to subpoena this information. The Supreme court should have already done that, but obviously it's controlled by right wing ideologues. So they're not going to do that. But by narrowing the scopes, uh, these committees have a very good chance of getting their hands on the documents. However, uh, I take that back. Both committees do not have a good chance of getting their hands on the documents. The financial services committee does. That's the committee, that's actually looking into the potential bank fraud, the intelligence committee.
That's the one that shift does. They're actually trying to say, like, we want to see if there's something in there that could lead for lead to, uh, being easily manipulable by another that's that's, that's a fishing expedition. That's a fishing expedition. Your trying to see if maybe there's something in there, some kind of financial holding that he has.
