A Fight Is Brewing Between House And Senate Republicans Over Biden Impeachment

As crazy as it may seem, Republicans in the Senate understand that they actually have to legislate as part of their jobs. That idea stands in stark contrast to Republicans in the House who have made it clear that they only want to investigate and impeach in the upcoming term. Senate Republicans are pushing back on this idea, setting up a nasty showdown for 2023. Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins explains what's happening.

It's no secret that Republicans in the House of Representatives led at the moment by Kevin McCarthy want to impeach President Biden once they take back over the house in early January. The problem that they have, of course, is the fact that even if they were able to impeach him in the house, they couldn't get him out of office and convict him in the Senate. Democrats even, uh, uh, uh, with a very slim majority still have a majority in the Senate. But even if the Republicans had a slim majority, instead, you still wouldn't hit the number needed to impeach and convict and remove. So impeaching him in the house is basically going to amount to nothing other than saying he is technically impeached, and he wears that mark for the rest of his, uh, life. Republicans in the Senate, however, have made it very clear to Kevin McCarthy that we don't want any part of this.

So there is a down brewing between Republicans in the House who want to investigate, investigate, investigate, and Republicans in the Senate who somehow are smart enough, shocking to me to understand that guys, we actually have to do a little bit of legislating or else we are going to get creamed in 2024. So you have now had multiple Republicans speak out against the investigations that are gonna be taking place in the house. You've got senior G o p, Senator Chuck Grassley. You have Senate, g o p leadership member John th you have Senator John Corn from Texas. And that's just the beginning. So even if Republicans in the house impeached Biden, they'd be lucky to hit 45 Republicans in the Senate that would vote to convict him. They know how dangerous it will be to launch these politically motivated investigations without providing any legislation for the public to see.

The big thing, of course, is 2024. What happens in 2024 is one, Republicans have an opportunity, obviously, since every seat is available to increase their lead in the House of Representatives, or conversely, they could once again get tossed out and Democrats retake the majority. The second option, or the second possibility they have is retaking the White House, which is a big thing. But if the public is off at Republicans for not doing anything for two years other than launching politically motivated investigations, the public's probably not gonna go with that. But the most important thing to those Senate Republicans, more important than house control, more important than White House control, is the fact that in 2024, the balance of power shifts in the elections in the

Senate, right? So this past year, and this is how it is, you know, every third Senate election, more Republicans were up for reelection than Democrats. So Republicans had to defend more, making it less likely they would be able to pick up seats on the other side in 2024. It's the other way around. Democrats have to defend more seats in the Senate twice as many as the Republicans do. That opens up the opportunity for, uh, Republicans to come in, scoop up a couple of those Democrat seats, and once again retake the majority. But they know they can't do that if they get bogged down and swept into these investigations by the House Republicans. So a showdown is looming. Folks between the House and the Senate, Republicans a civil war, what Marjorie Taylor Green has said that she welcomes, and it's gonna be between Republicans who understand how stupid this is, and Republicans who are so petty in the house that they can't help themselves from tanking their own party. It's gotta be fun to watch, unless of course you're a Republican.
