4:17Now PlayingDonald Trump has spent the entire year attacking Ron DeSantis, and he's landed some pretty decent shots against the Florida governor - at least enough to shave double digits off DeSantis' poll numbers. But now that DeSantis is officially in the Republican race, his allies say that they are preparing a massive counteroffensive to take down Trump. Time is no longer on their side, and the damage to their candidate might already be done, as Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins explains.

Now that Ron DeSantis has made it official that he is definitely running for president. He's not toying with us anymore about whether he will or won't be his allies from the, uh, political action committee. Never back down. The ones who actually recently came out and said, we went too hard against Donald Trump. We wish we hadn't. So never backed down, is actually only known for backing down right now. Uh, but anyway, they've announced that they're gonna invest about a hundred million in statewide efforts to not only promote Ron DeSantis, but also of course to knock Donald Trump down a few pegs. And the negative ads from DeSantis camp against Donald Trump have already started. He's only been in the campaign for a couple days and he is already hitting on Donald Trump for, as one of the ads says, handing the country over to Fauci during the Covid pandemic versus Ron DeSantis, who didn't do a thing about it down here in Florida and killed off, uh, uh, close to a hundred thousand people because he just didn't give a.
You know? So there's that. I mean, hell of a contrast there. Trump really didn't do anything. I mean, we didn't have any nationwide standards for Covid. That's, by the way, why people like Ron DeSantis were able to not do anything about it because the federal government wasn't forcing them to. So, I don't know exactly what you're hitting Trump on there, but I gotta tell you, it's probably not the strongest attack. Then again, Donald Trump keeps making fun of Ron DeSantis for eating pudding with his fingers. So this is going to be a very, very, very, very stupid primary season. But the problem DeSantis has is one, he waited until his poll numbers were backed down to the level of basically all the other has beens who were running for president. He didn't jump into the race when he had the wind at his back, when he had poll numbers that in some polls were beating Donald Trump.
He said, nah, not gonna do it. I'm gonna wait until I'm hugely unpopular, till I've embarrassed myself on the international stage, and then I'm gonna jump into the race. I'm gonna let Donald Trump attack me for six straight months, and I'm not gonna say a word about it. And of course, the damage for that is done. Trump is now leading DeSantis by over 30 points. Uh, poll came out this week. Trump is actually leading DeSantis in Iowa, the first state for the Republicans by 42 points. DeSantis was beating Trump in Iowa by like three or four points at the beginning of this year. And now Trump has a 42 point lead like DeSantis screwed the pooch on this. Not only on waiting so long to announce that he's actually running, but in not hitting back against Donald Trump. I mean, even as he's got his friends and allies attacking Trump, DeSantis is still out there
Saying, I'd consider pardoning Donald Trump for January 6th. So you are still trying to kiss his butt because that's what you do. Like you're a butt kisser and Trump is out there threatening to destroy everything you've ever loved in life. So, like I said, it's going to be very stupid. DeSantis is not a very good fighter at all. Some of his allies, some of these other political action committees that like him, but don't work with him, they may have a shot at making successful arguments, but as it stands right now, DeSantis is playing from behind because he very stupidly put himself in that position.
