5:23Now PlayingThe conservative, right wing propaganda machine in America is far stronger and larger than anything that the Left could dream of. And for years it was a force to be reckoned with. But during this year’s election, that massive, multi-billion dollar propaganda apparatus is doing absolutely nothing to move the needle in Trump’s direction. Has conservative media finally started to lose its influence over the country? Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins answers that question.

The conservative media machine, the conservative media apparatus in the United States via cable news, streaming services, uh, MAGA influencers on social media, and of course the YouTube presence from the right dwarfs. Anything that we have on the left, I mean, we cannot compete with the right wing media apparatus. And the big reason for that, of course, is 'cause those folks are well funded by corporations and think tanks and other organizations. They get all the money they can put on the conventions. T-P-U-S-A, the CPA crap that happens multiple times a year. So they really are the most powerful media group in this country, which is why to me, it's so shocking that none of them, or all of them combined, however you wanna say it, have been able to save Donald Trump's failing campaign. There was a time in this country when really the only conservative media you really, really had was Fox News and AM Radio.
But that was enough. That was enough to get a few million Americans out there spouting these right wing talking points. And then of course, with YouTube came a new generation of right-wing talking heads coinciding of course, with the death of radio and then the MAGA influencers on Instagram and, and X and, and uh, truth, social, all of that, more powerful than ever. So the question is, if they're more powerful than ever, how are they also weaker than ever right now? Right? Because that seems odd. Well, let me tell you, I'm not trying to downplay the influence that conservative media has and the danger that it poses to the electric. I believe it poses a great danger. It always has, always will. But here's the thing, when you think about it rationally, there are 333 million people in the United States of America. Fox News alone on a good night, pulls in about 3 million people, so little under 1% of the United States population.
But even if you add in all of these other conservative talkers, the few that are still on radio, the ones that are on YouTube and social media, let's say on any given day, 30 million people are tuning into all of those things combined, including newsmax and one America. And Frank's speech from Mike Lindell. Even if they got 30 million people on a good day, that means that 90 plus percent of the population is still not listening to them. I mean, 10% of the population ish, a little under 10 is still pretty good. Obviously it's more than any of us have on the left, but 10% of the population is not enough
To swing an election. So what happened to their power? Because a few years ago it was, now it's not. The difference is the power of conservative media does not lie with the people watching it. They're not the ones who make the big difference in elections. What makes the big difference is that the people watching it repeat the talking points to their friends and coworkers and families who are not watching political news. Those people will believe, Hey, I trust this guy. He's my friend. He's telling me that, oh God, the Democrats wanna set up death camps, death panels, whatever it is, they've got these FEMA coffins ready to kill everybody. You remember those talking points, right? They believed it without question.
Now, when those Rightwing media consumers go and repeat these talking points, nobody believes 'em. Part of that is because we live in the age of information. It's easy to debunk things. It's easy to get news from all sides and see, oh, wait a minute, these people are kind of nutty. Even for people who aren't regularly consuming political news, they can log into Facebook, hop on Twitter, and they see stupid things, whether they wanna see 'em or not, and they're like, yeah, that seems kind of dumb and outlandish. So conservative media does not have the same kind of influence that it did even four or five years ago.
