The Washington Post was able to get their hands on some private Twitter messages sent between JD Vance, and apparently a friend of his who of course, the Washington Post says, decided to remain anonymous due to the threat of retaliation against them. But in these messages sent across Twitter, you know, private messaging on Twitter, this was in the year 2020. JD Vance told this individual, this associate or friend or whatever it is, that Donald Trump failed as president and didn't deliver. Specifically JD Vance said, quote, Trump has just so thoroughly failed to deliver on his economic populism, failed to deliver on his economic populism. That is what JD Vance wrote in this private Twitter message in February of 2020. And there's more, right? But the big one is that during the last year of Trump's presidency, even before Covid JD Vance was telling his friend, this guy failed, he then went on to say that he firmly believes that President Biden is going to win the election.

And then it was just Joe Biden, but he said, quote, I think Trump will probably lose again. That was prior to Covid. That was in February of 2020. Covid was just starting to emerge. You know, we didn't know if it was, you know, gonna be as bad as the media said if it was gonna be easier or what it was gonna do. We had no idea that toilet paper shortages were coming or that lockdowns were gonna be a thing. We PPE shortages, masks all that we didn't know at the time, but already then Vance was telling his friend, Trump failed. Biden's gonna win. So as you can imagine, that one's hard to walk back. We know JD Vance has been called out for his past comments about Donald Trump comparing him to Amer being America's Hitler. Uh, all his horrible past comments about women showing off his misogyny.

But this one, this is bigger because this is a critique of Donald Trump's time in office, right? This is JD Vance saying that I am now running with this guy, even though four years ago I said he was a failure. And for the record, Vance is correct about that. Trump's administration was a failure. That's why it drives me crazy when all these advisors and strategists are like, you gotta talk about your record, really? Okay, if you guys wanna lose, sure. But Trump didn't deliver for anyone. And even JD Vance in February of 2020 understood that and was willing to tell his friends that. So how's he gonna walk this back? Oh, don't worry. He's trying in a statement. Vance spokesman William Martin said, Vance's 2020 assessment of Trump's failure to deliver on his economic policies was not meant as a criticism of the former president.

Oh no. But of establishment Republicans who thwarted much of Trump's popula economic agenda to increase tariffs and boost domestic manufacturing in Congress. Fortunately, Senator Vance believes that Republicans in Congress are much more aligned with President Trump's agenda today than they were back then. So he is confident that they won't run into those same issues within the party. So I was criticizing Trump, but I actually wasn't really criticizing Trump. I was criticizing other Republicans, even though I only said Trump failed. I didn't say the Republicans failed. I said, Trump failed. But I meant, what I meant by that was that it was the Republicans, it was everybody else but him. So that's, that's why, that's where the confusion comes from, because I said Trump, but I meant literally everybody but Trump. That's how they're walking it back, that that's how they think they can get out of this mess.
