4:10Now PlayingRepublican Senator John Cornyn appears to be trying to get Pete Hegseth to withdraw from consideration as the next Secretary of Defense. During a recent segment on Newsmax, Cornyn said that the confirmation hearings are going to be very unpleasant for both Hegseth and his family, which means that all of his dirty laundry is going to be aired out for the world to see. This warning – or threat, depending on how you view it – is likely an attempt to either get Trump to pull the nomination or to get Hegseth to bow out, as Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins explains.

A very weird thing happened during an appearance on Newsmax this week by Republican Senator John Cornyn of Texas, while Corny was on the show to talk about Pete. He's nomination to be defense secretary and all the problems that he is of course facing, uh, Cornin admitted like, Hey, I'm gonna vote to confirm the guy. I like the guy. Right? But, uh, the confirmation process is gonna be really bad for him. So it seems like Cornyin of course, is easily supporting Hegseth. He said he was, but at the same time, kind of giving him the heads up that, Hey, listen, this might not be the thing for you. Here is what Cornyin said on Newsmax, I'm supporting Pete's confirmation and I believe ultimately he will be confirmed. I know of no one who said that they will vote against him. Yeah, but there's like five or six people that have said they definitely don't know, and some of them, including Lindsey Graham who've said, I'm not quite sure.
So while nobody on the right has said they will definitely vote against him, you have people who have said, we don't know. And that of course is just as bad. So you're kind of being a little dishonest, but sure, he then continued. It's important for all of these nominees to come around and answer questions. I told Pete, this is gonna be a very unpleasant process for him and his family having been involved in the Kavanaugh hearings. I know there will be unnamed accusations and some things that are going to be hurtful not only to him and his family, but he's ready for that. His wife is ready for that, and I'm confident he will be confirmed.
Now, it's interesting that you brought up the Kavanaugh hearings, right? Because we all know what Brett Kavanaugh was accused of doing. We all know that Donald Trump, you know, put the brakes on that FBI investigation so that they couldn't find anything about him. But the things that Kavanaugh was accused of, interesting that you would bring that up about Hegseth. As we all know, hegseth of course did pay a massive settlement after he was accused of assault. The woman, of course has been, uh, uh, basically signed an NDA so she's not allowed to come forward and talk about her experiences and again, kind of find it odd 'cause Cornyn's like, hell yeah, I'm gonna vote for this guy, but I'm, I'm just letting all these people know all your dirty laundry is gonna come out. That kind of sounds like a warning that, hey, maybe you ought to consider not doing this. And by the way, not just for Hgsi, if you want to talk about horrible things that have come out about other nominees in the past, I mean, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Kind of takes the cake. And I say that as a guy that used to work with him. You
Know, I I, he, he was a co-host of Ring of Fire Radio when his, uh, sex book came out. Like how that has not gotten more scrutiny. Kind of shocking, right? And then of course, the babysitter story from this past summer, although, you know, that that was not necessarily full-blown assault by any means, but things like that are all going to come back out. We all know the bear, the brain worm and the whale head too, but all of these people cornyn's pointing out, it's gonna be pretty unpleasant. It's not gonna be fun. So he'll support you blindly because that's what he does. But if y'all could go ahead and drop out, I am sure Cornin would greatly appreciate it because even if you get confirmed, people are gonna realize what scumbags you can be. And that ain't gonna go away, just 'cause you got a fancy new job.
