Kristi Noem has been fired as Secretary of Homeland Security after a series of controversies that drew bipartisan criticism in the Senate. The fallout included questions about a $220 million taxpayer-funded advertising campaign critics said was designed to promote Noem personally rather than inform the public.

Now, Senator Markwayne Mullin is stepping in as the new head of the Department of Homeland Security, a move already sparking controversy in Washington. Critics say Mullin’s appointment raises serious concerns about how the agency will handle immigration enforcement and national security policy moving forward.

But while leadership at DHS may be changing, the administration’s immigration crackdown isn’t. Deportations, enforcement operations, and the broader border strategy remain firmly in place, meaning the policies behind the crackdown are continuing even after Noem’s removal.
