Norwegian ambassador Jussi Tanner walked briskly back to his makeshift headquarters near the field hospital. Operations at HKIA were coming off the rails. The remaining troops were utterly exhausted. The lack of sleep coupled with endless threat reports and near-constant exposure to the suffering masses had taken a physical and mental toll.
Things weren’t going well inside the airfield, either. Conspicuous- looking armed groups, who had not been inside the perimeter before he arrived, skulked around in the darkness—Jussi had no idea who these men were. Plumes of smoke billowed from burn barrels outside the various temporary headquarters as NATO staff shoveled sensitive and classified papers into the flames, lighting up the night and casting shadows on the sides of buildings.
As he walked, Jussi slipped on something. He caught himself before falling and turned on his phone’s flashlight.
In front of him, a vast field of thousands of tan body armor vests littered the ground. The arrangement was so dense he couldn’t see the ground underneath for one hundred feet. In their haste to evacuate, NATO members had flung their vests on the ground like snakes shedding skin. They didn’t want the planes to be overburdened with unnecessary weight.
Just then he heard a violent, crunching sound. Jussi squinted through the darkness. In the flickering shadow of a burn barrel, he could barely make out the silhouette of a squatting NATO soldier smashing combat helmets with a hammer to render them useless.
This can’t last much longer, he thought.
