The large concrete inscription in the forest says, in Lithuanian, essentially: “Here Hitler’s occupiers and their local collaborators murdered people.”
This is one of the most tragic Holocaust sites in Eastern Europe.
What happened here
Between 1941 and 1944, during the Nazi occupation of Lithuania, approximately 70,000 Jews — mostly from Vilna (Vilnius), once called the “Jerusalem of Lithuania” — were murdered in the forests of Ponary/Paneriai.
In total, around 100,000 people were killed there, including:
• Jews
• Polish intellectuals and resistance members
• Soviet prisoners of war
• Lithuanian anti-Nazi figures
