By October 2019, he was engulfed in a severe depression, increasing his alcohol consumption to dangerous levels and ultimately requiring him to take leave from his job.
The situation reached a critical point in January 2020 when Mike was found in his home, barely breathing due to acute liver failure, hepatic encephalopathy, and kidney failure, with toxins accumulating in his blood as his liver ceased functioning. Rushed to the emergency room, he slipped into a coma for nearly three weeks, awakening to the stark reality that he didn't qualify for a liver transplant and would need to maintain sobriety for six months to even be considered for the transplant list, despite slim chances of survival.
Weighing 268 lbs and having to relearn basic human functions like walking and eating, Mike faced his recovery with an unwavering spirit, buoyed by his family's love and a renewed faith in God. Miraculously, within three months of waking from his coma, his liver returned to normal function, and his kidneys and mind healed. Today, Mike's life is a celebration of second chances. He actively participates in weekly therapy sessions addressing non-addiction-related issues, embracing every challenge and emotion with gratitude. Mike's journey is not just a personal victory; it's a compelling narrative of hope and redemption, inspiring others to believe in the possibility of recovery and the strength to change their own destinies.
