Some people lose themselves quietly—behind a smile, behind a “nice guy” reputation, behind a life that looks fine from the outside. And then one day… the body forces the truth to the surface.

In this episode of The Suffering Podcast, Kevin Donaldson and Mike Felice sit down with Jeremy Campbell for a raw, gritty conversation about the suffering of empowerment—and how the thing he gave away most wasn’t money, time, or opportunities… it was his self-worth.

Jeremy grew up loving sports, chasing structure, chasing meaning… until his body betrayed the dream. A neurological disorder (Charcot-Marie-Tooth) and repeated surgeries ended competitive athletics. Then came the prescription trap—Percocet at 17—and the slow slide into addiction, depression, and isolation.

And just when life couldn’t tighten the vice any further… Jeremy’s heart stopped.

Not once.

Not twice.

Over 20 times.

Flatlines. Shocks. A recurring dream of running toward a white light—running, even though he couldn’t run in real life—leaving him with questions about fear, faith, and what happens when you’re convinced you’re not worth saving.

But the open loop is this: near-death didn’t change him right away… fatherhood did.

When Jeremy learned he was having a son, the internal math changed. He couldn’t bring a child into a tornado. He chose recovery—then found unexpected therapy where most people never look: youth sports coaching. Not the “sit on the bucket” kind. The kind where you shake every kid’s hand, ask how their day went, read body language, and become part coach… part mentor… part therapist… part safe place.

This is a conversation about:

Imposter syndrome and why confident people can be drowning inside

How coaches shape identity—either building kids up or crushing them

Why sports teach life lessons far beyond athletics

The reality of addiction and recovery (especially for “successful” addicts)

And why empowerment starts with the hardest person to coach: yourself

If you’ve ever struggled with self-worth, battled addiction, faced a medical crisis, or tried to become the adult you needed as a kid—this episode will hit you in the chest.

Watch until the end for the moment Jeremy explains what suffering taught him—and why giving up looks darker than staying in the fight.
