YouTube Description
as posted by the channelFormer chancellor of the exchequer Sajid Javid has spoken to Times Radio about his move to raise the minimum age for marriage in England and Wales to eighteen.
Speaking to Tom Newton Dunn and Daisy MacAndrew on T&G on Sunday, he explained why he's putting forward legislation to make the change:
Child marriage is child abuse and this type of abuse has far reaching consequences. It hurts thousands of children and has hurt thousands of children over the country over the last decade. And I think it's time we put it into it.
On whether there's been a reluctance to address the issue due to fears about racism towards Asian communities, he said it's an issue affecting different communities:
It is also by the way a particular problem, I'm sad to say, in the Roma community. But it doesn't matter what community it is. It's wrong in every community and in fact since I announced this bill and my intention, I've had support from all communities including many many members of the British Asian community of Roma community and many others, saying this is absolutely right. Sometimes they've come to me...and they've said they've seen this happen in their communities and it's time that we put an end to it. It doesn't fit with British values. We cannot allow this to continue in any way and I hope the government can support my bill, and we can put an end to this abhorrent practice.
