Former British Ambassador to Afghanistan Sir Nick Kay Speaks to Charlotte Ivers on Afghanistan

The UK's former Ambassador to Afghanistan has told Times Radio that the UK has failed to complete the mission and Afghans’ achievements are now at risk, and as a result "the terror threat continues to exist" to the UK from ISIS-K and Al Qaeda. He went on to say that "we are less well placed now to tackle it, because we have no presence on the ground."

He added that "we do need to engage with [the Taliban]. I mean the reality is, they are the de facto authorities and administration in a 37 million strong country in a very sensitive part of the world"

Despite that, he said that the Taliban haven't changed: "I've been sort of tracking their progress one way or another over the last 20 years. I don't think they've changed. You know, I think you know, one of their strengths, if you like is the single mindedness and the strength of conviction and, and their faith in in what they are doing and their cause."
