Answering questions from Jenny Kleeman and Luke Jones, Paul Niland, who has been living in Ukraine for 19 years, said: "I don't have military experience.
"But I'm in decent shape, and just yesterday, in actual fact, I acquired a bulletproof vest and ballistic goggles, and I looked at where to sign up, when to sign up."
He said Ukraine was his home and he was not leaving, despite advice from the foreign office asking Britons in the country to depart.
He also shared the general mood in Kiev, and his involvement in the previous revolution of Maidan in 2014.
