George Brandis has weighed in publicly to defend Priti Patel’s controversial new immigration policy, which is loosely modelled on Australia’s offshore processing system for asylum seekers who arrive by boat. He spoke out after the UN refugee agency said last month that Britain’s plan would amount to an “egregious breach” of international, refugee and human rights law.
Speaking to Times Radio, in his only broadcast interview with Lucy Fisher to mark the end of his four-year term as Australian high commissioner to the UK, Brandis said: “At no point do our arrangements, nor as I read them the UK arrangements, breach the ‘non-refoulement’ obligations in the UN Refugee Convention.”
