What Are Midterm Elections?

This year, 2022, is the year for midterm elections, or elections that happen midway through a U.S. president’s term. It’s a chance for voters to make their desires known to current leaders as well as to reshape what isn’t working in government—both at the state and the national levels. In 2022 alone, 35 states will elect their governors, 535 seats of Congress are up for election and one-third of the Senate is up for election.

But that’s only on the national level. On the state level, all the state representative seats are up for election, as well as almost half of the state senators. On the local level, voters will decide their states’ direction over the next four years. This includes voting for city and county seats, school boards, sheriffs and more.

Voters who are concerned about the direction of their local government, state government or national government will want to examine the candidates and policies up for election and vote in a way that protects their values. Currently, only about one in eight Americans vote in the midterm elections. That means that only about 12.5% of Americans will choose the outcome of these midterm elections and, therefore, the future of our county. Now is the time for Christians to become informed about the issues and vote, so their values are represented in the government.
