The primary purpose of Memorial Day is to mourn, remember, and honor the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the armed forces.
History:
Decoration Day: Originally established in 1868 as "Decoration Day," it was a time for communities to decorate the graves of fallen Civil War soldiers with flowers and flags.
Evolution: Following World War I, the day was expanded to honor fallen service members from all American conflicts.
Federal Observance: In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a federal holiday, observed annually on the last Monday of May to create a three-day weekend.
The triangular folding of a U.S. flag involves 13 precise, distinct steps, with each fold representing a specific value or historic principle:
1st Fold: A symbol of life.
2nd Fold: A symbol in the belief of eternal life.
3rd Fold: Honors and remembers veterans who served to protect peace and liberty.
4th Fold: Represents our weaker nature and trust in God during times of peace and war.
5th Fold: A tribute to the United States of America.
6th Fold: Represents where our hearts lie in pledging allegiance to the flag.
