Retailers like Walmart and DoorDash are starting to offer a new returns option where a delivery driver pulls up to your house, takes a photo of the merchandise, tosses it in a bag with returns from other people, and hauls it off. Sometimes, it costs you nothing—but not always.

To better understand what the new world of returns could look like, I went for a ride with the last-mile logistics startup Returnmates and talked with a software return company called Optoro.
