6:17Now PlayingH.R. 40 is titled the "Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African-Americans Act." Representative Shelia Jackson Lee of Texas sponsored the bill and it establishes a commission to study reparations for African Americans in the United States. According to Congress, the commission "shall examine slavery and discrimination in the colonies and the United States from 1619 to the present." It will then recommend what it says are "appropriate remedies." In a hearing over the bill, Representative Jackson said African Americans are overcomers who believe in success and determination. Still, they continue to feel the sting of racial disparities in the country. The bill has over 170 cosponsors giving broad perspectives on the issue.
