7:20Now PlayingThe American Red Cross reports that red cell demand at trauma centers in the US climbed by 10% in 2021. This blood shortage is just another consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Pampee Young, the Chief Medical Officer of Biomedical Services of the American Red Cross, joins “Start Your Day” to speak about how this shortage is affecting people with sickle cell disease; a condition that is more common in Black people than those of other ethnicities.
“We have in this country about 100,000 people who suffer from sickle cell disease,” Dr. Young says. “These patients often receive frequent transfusions. “
The doctor highlights that it is preferred to give sickle cell patients blood from within the African -American community. The organization is urging healthy individuals to donate blood, but specifically those of African -American descent to help those living with sickle cell disease.
