As part of the Biden administration’s broader health equity agenda, the Department of Health and Human Services has announced a new office to treat climate change as a public health issue. Ali says climate change means we have a “warming up” going on of our oceans and atmosphere, which comes from an addiction to using fossil fuels. In terms of how climate change has contributed to Hurricane Ida, “It’s a direct connection,” Ali says. “The choices that we have made are making the storms more intense, they’re making the heat waves hotter temperatures, it’s causing these droughts, the droughts are causing the wildfires. So, it’s all connected.”
The office will help Black and Brown communities by making sure necessary data is in place to understand where the impacts are happening and to ensure grant dollars are making it to frontline organizations, among other things.
