Rikers Island is one of the most notorious jails in America. It's known not just for housing inmates but also for the violence and dangerous conditions inside the jail. This year a record number of people have died there, leading to more calls for the jail to be shut down.
In 2019, New York City council members voted in favor of closing Rikers Island by the year 2027.
