2:10Now PlayingOn this day in 1978, Charlie Rose’s reimagining of L. Frank Baum’s 1900s American classic, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” debuted in the form of a “Super Soul Musical” called “The Wiz,” a retelling of the story in the context of urban culture.
The show opened on Oct. 21, 1974, at Morris A. Mechanic Theatre in Baltimore. It debuted on Broadway less than a year later, and a national tour and movie version followed.
“The Wiz” was a less than an ideal commercial release, but quickly became a classic among Black consumers. The 1975 Broadway production went on to win seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Costume Design and Best Choreography.
