9:25Now PlayingOver a quarter of congressional seats are currently held by women, which is about a 50% increase over the last decade. In 2002, women made up only 22% of state legislatures. Today, 31% of state legislators in the United States and about 30% of governorships are held by women.
While that’s still short of being representative of the majority status, as women make up 51.1% of the U.S. population, it is still a sizeable increase that took a lot of womanpower to achieve. Those numbers are growing in large part to an organization known as Emerge, the only organization dedicated to recruiting and training Democratic women to run for office.
