3:08Now PlayingDec. 26 marks the start of Kwanzaa, the seven-day celebration of Black culture and its Pan-African roots.
Since its founding in 1966, the week-long holiday has been observed with candle lighting ceremonies, gift giving and reflections on past struggles and goals for the future.
Kwanzaa has been designed in part to give Black Americans an opportunity to celebrate their heritage and culture.
“It is an opportunity to for people to know who we are as a people, to come into our community and break bread with us, and enjoy the culture of Black people,” said Clinton Sockwell from the Village Project, who host the largest Kwanzaa celebration in San Francisco.
