as posted by the channelJames E. West co-invented the groundbreaking foil electret microphone, a type of condenser microphone that has forever changed the way people hear the world today.
In 1957, while working at Bell Laboratories, he and his colleague Gerhard Sessler developed a more sensitive, compact and inexpensive microphone, which they later patented in 1962.
Since 1968, West’s brilliant invention has been the major microphone for communications. Ninety percent of all microphones, including those found in cell phones, laptops, baby monitors, and hearing aids, use technology based on the foil electret microphone.
