In 1897, he patented the world-famous Jenny Coupler, which automatically locked train cars together.
Before his invention, a person would have to manually place a pin in a link between two rail cars. But thanks to Beard, countless lives and limbs were probably saved.
The Jenny Coupler was so effective that Congress at the time enacted the federal safety appliance act. This enforced the use of automatic couplers can still be seen in the railroad industry today.
