In 1928, Joyner created and patented her one-of-a-kind invention as the device offered a new way to curl hair that lasted for days. Later, she also invented a scalp protector to make the process less painful.
Joyner earned a national reputation for Black beauty care instruction. During her time, she styled the hair of some of the most notable Black women in history, including Billie Holiday, Ethel Waters and Marian Anderson.
Joyner used her success to help elevate other Black beauticians.
