At the end of the 19th century, the young Third Republic, born in the ashes of the humiliating defeat that was the Franco-Prussian war of 1870, would face a scandal that tore apart the very fabric of French society for more than a decade. L’Affaire Dreyfus!

(As some viewers have kindly pointed out, the Eiffel Tower was built for the Exposition Universelle of 1889, and not 1900 and Jean Jaurès was re-elected as Member of the Parliament, not President. His speech forced the then Prime Minister, Émile Combes, to re-open the investigation. Sorry for these embarrassing mistakes.)
