What Is a Business Cycle

The cycle comprises four phases: expansion, peak, contraction, and trough, with recovery beginning at the trough and potentially leading to sustained economic growth if self-sustaining. Recession severity is measured by depth, diffusion, and duration, and the NBER is responsible for determining start and end dates for these economic phases, often with delays. Additionally, stock prices typically fall during contractions due to investor fear, rather than the contraction itself, making predictions of business cycles challenging, though early indicators such as rising unemployment can signal impending shifts in the economy.
